Issue 15 Featured Artists

  • Facebox

    Claire Curtin

Claire Curtin is a recent graduate from Fine Art Printmaking course at Manchester Metropolitan University and currently an intern within Blank Media's exhibitions team. The focus of Curtin's recent work has been the recording of faces that instinctively appear when random marks are given character. Her intention is to interpret the faces, providing them with characters and narratives.

  • Marianne Daniels

Marianne Daniels is a Manchester-based poet who has never appeared in our pages before. Her work plays with the abstract and manages through the use of unusual and striking metaphor to pack a lot of meaning into her usually short and sharp lines. But while her work may be stylistically rich it is never at the expense of the emotion of the piece, as her work always has real feeling at its heart.

  • Penelope Turnbull

Penelope Turnbull's poetry may be short, but don't mistake a lack of verbiage for a lack of something to say. Her work explores relationships but refuses to tie itself down to a single tone or style. Whether showing how the simplest of everyday routines can reflect the emotion between two people, or at the way a heart can be set a-flutter by a cowboy, she finds angles that make this oldest of topics seem new.

  • Martin Richards

We are delighted to welcome Martin Richards back to blankpages - his story 'Shadowness' appeared back in issue 3. 'Falling To Pieces' is another piece of urban fantasy in which characters with recognisable real-world jobs find the fantastical mixing with the mundane, and respond with a logic that attempts to meet the demands of both.

  • Finneyerkes

Finneyerkes are a duo from the USA. Matt Finney lives in Alabama and provides the spoken-word vocals, Randy Yerkes lives in Virginia and provides the musical accompaniment, occasionally taking centre stage with the instrumental tracks. The duo pass recordings back and forth, gradually tweaking and perfecting as they go. The resulting sounds sit alongside the likes of Godspeed You! Black Emperor and Mogwai.

    Andrew Gilmore

Andrew Gilmore's work may be startling to look at, but it's more than just a pretty picture. His use of collage makes us reconsider simple images in a whole new light, and his work in general seeks to explore the issues that attract his attention - see his forthcoming exhibition 'Beautiful Women With Depression', or the detail images that feature in this issue and scrutinise the worlds of religion and finance for example.

  • S.A.D.

    Joseph Booker

Finally we would like to say a big thank you to Joe for his fantastic illustrated stories that have graced the pages of blankpages for the last 8 months and we look forward to working with him again in the future.
