Instrumental rock music is an idea as old as rock music itself, but the genre seems to have gained popularity among forward thinking musicians and listeners since Godspeed You! Black Emporer and Mogwai first opened our eyes over ten years ago.  We here at Blank Media wish to celebrate the wealth of creative talent in Manchester that is focused on this area and as such are bringing together a diverse selection of some of the cities finest instrumental experimenters, from veterans like Day For Airstrikes to relatively new bands like NASDAQ, from jazz, through funk, pop and metal, to things which don't even have a name yet!  We've also invited a few friends from around the country to join us as you'll see below...

This Month's Lineup

  • BlankSounds [BlankWeekend]

    Day for Airstrikes

Day For Airstrikes are a band who have gone from strength to strength since their formation in 2002 and their summer tour with Crash Of Rhinos saw them playing some of their most enthralling live sets to date with psychadelic disco, prog excess and party vibes. 3rd album 'Into The Comet' was released earlier this year and is an excellent demonstration of their ability to weave sweet melodies into challenging, epic, instrumental rock. It is increasingly difficult to see this band perform live due to the small number of gigs they play, so take this excellent opportunity to see them play a headline set.

    Eyeball Eyeball

This will be Eyeball Eyeball's first time in Manchester. Anyone who saw The Wow or Spy Versus Spy may have noticed them having one of the best drummers ever. Well, he's back, and in fine form, together with guitar and bass. The trio incorporate lightning-quick jazz guitar, deep, deep funk and heavy math-rock to create an intense half hour of sprawling rock mayhem.

  • BlankSounds [BlankWeekend]

    Go Lebanon

As with Day For Airstrikes, Go Lebanon are stalwarts of the local scene. It's been a while since we've seen them so we won't go into too much detail about what's in store but needless to say, the band are always thinking one step ahead of their audience and will have a few tricks up their sleeves for you. They are a unique and many-limbed group who make unusual sounds and killer riffs, never failing to throw in a groove that holds everything together.

  • BlankSounds [BlankWeekend]

    NASDAQ

It's been a few months since NASDAQ have played live so catch them while you can. NASDAQ is an alterego of The FTSE 100, and is the louder and heavier of the two. Expect long songs with sweet twinkling melodies that give birth to powerful metal climaxes and maybe even some guitar solos.

  • BlankSounds [BlankWeekend]

    The Shogun's Decapitator

Stourbridge is a strange place and this is it's strange product. The Shogun's Decapitator are a quartet who play angular, instrumental, math-disco and they do it very well too. The songs are short and snappy and are up to their armpits in catchy hooks and, importantly, are all inspired by and dedicated to things from Stourbridge. Having made a name for themselves at various Rusholme house parties the group are now venturing onto the big stage, please don't be afraid to dance.
