Late at night, whilst Manchester is sleeping, artists Kyle Saxton & Marcus Ali (Raggaphoto) are creating their next masterpiece…
Working in and around Manchester, Raggaphoto like to find the darkest, grittiest locations for their take on contemporary graffiti. Leaving no remnants, needing no alter-ego’s to protect their identities, Kyle& Marcus use the medium of light to paint the city. “Our work challenges the norm of conventional photography and graffiti replacing paint with light…”. Reacting to the old purist photographic theories of using light as the medium, Raggaphoto bring in a contemporary twist.
Using various light sources including torches, flashlights, fairy lights, strip lights, cold cathodes, in fact anything the pair can get their hands on, they are the masters of their own work. The torch has replaced the paint brush and the photograph has replaced the canvas. “Something that we feel is an important characteristic of our work is that there is no post-production, we like the image to be raw, for everything to be done in-camera. We find this much more satisfying once we have made the final image…”
Through the work in this exhibition, Kyle & Marcus show a different, almost magical side to the city. “The work that we make is very urban and our inspiration is gathered from the city around us, the vivid colours of our light graffiti contrasts the murky, somewhat sinister areas that we shoot…” Forget Banksy, Raggaphoto are the new kids on the block…!

Raggaphoto: Marcus Ali
Marcus Ali, up and coming artist and designer, is very meticulous in his approach to aesthetics, he strives to perfect the final shot. Spending any spare time drawing and designing, with a keen interest in tattoo art, which has assisted him in accomplishing his goals visually.
Raggaphoto: Kyle Saxton
Kyle Saxton, a keen photographer who enjoys finding exciting, whilst enigmatic compositions for new work, has studied Visual Arts at the University of Salford. This is where he gained experience in photography and film making and gathered the skills to perfect his light graffiti.
