Cartwheel Arts seek an audacious artist and waggish wordsmith to reinterpret the work of Tim Bobbin

Cartwheel have been commissioned by Pennines Festival in Littleborough to reinterpret for our times the work of the scurrilous and seditious caricaturist and Lancashire dialect writer Tim Bobbin.

What does the project consist of?
We wish to recruit one swift and skilful illustrator and one confident, outgoing writer to work as a team. Together you will approach, or be introduced to, people in the pubs, clubs, nail salons, libraries, post offices and cornershops of Littleborough with the aim of capturing their stories on sketchpad and on USB recording stick (or similar). If you’re shy, don’t apply! There may be particular events which you will be asked to attend, and particular individuals with whom appointments will be made.

The words will then be edited and the sketches digitally tidied up. The original sketches and edited stories will be exhibited and later presented to the subjects.  Further editing will then pick out one key sentence. Picture and key text will then be published as ephemeral products, such as beermats. Some stories may be translated into Lancashire dialect, and/or into modern speech forms such as txt msgng.

The themes of the contributions, and the role of the writer in teasing the stories out will be agreed beforehand.  We expect that each sitting will take about half an hour. Even if there is a stream of willing volunteers, which is by no means guaranteed, it is unlikely that you will complete more than 5 pieces in a half day session. We hope for around 30 — 40 contributions in all.

Styles of illustration and writing

We are not looking for detailed eighteenth century engravings, or for exaggerated and unflattering portraits of the great and good.  We would like to hear from illustrators and graphic artists working in many styles.  In the same way, we are not looking for libellous exposés — but if contributors volunteer controversial material…

Sessions will take place in October and November.  We hope to organise 8 sessions, plus time for editing, scanning etc. All times and places to be arranged, but if you are interested but know that you are unavailable at particular times in the autumn, please say so at the outset.

Deadline for expressions of interest 9.00am Monday 8th September to

Cartwheel Arts, 110 Manchester St, Heywood, OL10 1DW

Please send examples of your work, either physical or electronic (we realise you may not have done anything quite like this before..)
