5 Photographers by caitlin346
Artist's Comments
Alongside other projects this year Caitlin Howard has been researching the idea of Art Schools. She Investigated famous institutes, namely Black Mountain College, North Carolina. A school that only existed from 1933 to 1957 and taught anti-academic progressive principles. The artist discovered a magazine that had been made by photography students at the college called '5 Photographers.' Only twenty five copies of one issue was published. Caitlin re-made the magazine using a doctored BMC review and found images of the school. This idea of re-made work manifested itself into a short 8mm film, based on photographs by Hazel Larsen of the dancer Merce Cunningham dancing in the grounds of Black Mountain College. The project turned the focus back onto the Manchester School of Art-a book entitled 'A Visit To An Art School' which was a series of images of students past and present printed in blue to reflect changing attitudes in how art schools are now run.
