Biography / Personal Statement
My work deals with topics of life-death, religion, vanitas, social ills, relationships, innocence, and decay - anything to do with life. Using multiple plastic kitsch items is an integral part of the making process. From war memorabilia, religious icons, the porn industry to cute 1950's toys, they are used to evoke response and memory. My way of working is organic and spontaneous following a roaming thought process.
Ideas originate from the 1950's Pop Art movement, one of the most influential 20th Century art movements. The style is typified by its focus on popular and consumer culture, embracing the everyday and common place, directly using or manipulating images from media, advertising, mass production and branded products, fashion and music. I adopt this style and am inspired by the materialistic plastic culture we live in. My works on canvas can be surface obsessed or combine historic and current materials or theories. A sense of humour, as well as a slightly subversive facet is also evident. I have developed and evolved along with contemporary society, culture and all related concerns. "The viewer is hypnotized into the work by the sublime found in the sparkle of glitter, the sumptuous textures and vivid colours in which, the cute, layered appearance camouflages the crude and seedy side of life"
