Biography / Personal Statement
I am particularly interested for myself in exploring the boundaries of a Hyper-Real Figuration and Abstraction in Art with the myths, symbols and icons of my own time, my story for the world with the people and places that I know or imagine that I know.
One of my current research project is related to ‘Bridges’, an idea that came naturally in my efforts to explore some artistic, social and emotional issues in which I’m personally involved in.
I am attracted by the vivid, vibrant and multi-faced co-habitation of different cultures and different times and I like to treat, interpret and recreate a different reality with a constant questioning of my art.
For that reason a work of Art is always for me as a step further in the no man’s land of our past and future lives, a powerful spiritual language in the every day communication in the world.

Maria Emilov’s art is a deep evocation of the hidden feelings of the ‘hunted’ and ‘the estranged’. She takes us back into that lost ‘other country’ where we meet the real self, locked in behind the familiar norms of social and cultural identity. Her collages of familiar cityscapes reveal a surprising ‘under-image’ that exists behind the linked and painted photographic surfaces. The result is artwork that can be read on several levels, a re-imaging of everyday life that peels back appearances to reveal a series of meaningful signs and symbols. Maria’s work draws on both the constructive and destructive powers contained within the magic of human creativity. She is particularly interested in the notion of time and ‘anamnesis’ – the bridge back to memory, social meanings and philosophic truth. Maria started her research on cultural models, experimenting with links between fine and performance art in the National Academy of Theatre and Cinema, Sofia, Bulgaria. She is currently studying painting at Wimbledon College. She’s participating too in the exhibition Tabula Rasa, Gallery Aferro Newark, NJ March 21 - May 16, 2009. For further information keep an eye on www.blankmediacollective/ Maria Emilov The show is inspired by some of the themes in David Oluwale’s The Hounding on stage at the Hackney Empire Theatre 24 March – 28 March 2009.
