Artist Statement
Suzanne Patterson
In my practice, I have been exploring the ideas of compulsion and addiction. This often expressed through the use of multiples. I work with images or shapes that can be repeated to create a large scale drawing or instalation. As all the work is complete by hand, this gives it more impact. Currently I’m looking at my own environment to inform my practice as well as the compulsive need to create. I use a dark sense of humour to convey the ideas behind the work.
I use the mediums of drawing, text, sculpture and installations to create the pieces.
With all my work the ideas are formed in 2D first before progressing the projects into other mediums. The drawings help to visualise how best to construct the installation or sculpture.
I often show my sketchbooks and other preliminary drawings as part of my shows, I believe that this gives the viewer the opportunity to feel more involved with the artistic process.
The spaces in which I work will often dictate how the work will be viewed and what form the work will take. This is more present in my site responsive installation pieces in which the work was made for the space it was displayed in.
Having worked on a variety of projects with different kinds of galleries and institutions, I have gain experience in being able to exhibit work in tradition gallery spaces, but I have also been given the opportunity to experiment with the my ideas of presentation by been able to exhibit pieces in more unconventional spaces, such as basements, stair cases and windows.
