EXHIBITION SYNOPSIS:
Perception/Deception showcases the work of artists from the No Such Thing collective in collaboration with Blank Media Collective. Perception is the process the brain uses to interpret information. Deception is the practice of deliberately making somebody believe things that are not the whole truth.

NO SUCH THING
No Such Thing Collective is a not-for-profit collective first founded in 2005 with a constitution to help create opportunities for early career artists and to develop networks with other arts collectives initiating creative practice and debate.

No Such Thing utilises the wealth of skills and experience of all involved to aid personal, professional development and create a range of exhibitions, events and community outreach work both within the local community and the international fine art arena.

Benjamin Sephton-Smith | ‘Odd Panting’
Focusing on form/state and representation of iconic images, the inconstant states of visual language are the main concerns of my work. In considering many different facets of universal appraisal my intention is always to promote development rather than showing an absolute.

Dean Kelland | ‘The Desperate Hours’
Mediated language and popular cultural references such as British situation comedy are explored through a process of re-appropriation and performative visual arts practice utilising multimedia approaches.

Hilton Vasey | ‘Tesla Helmet & Speaker’
Fragmented memory, autobiography and identity are explored within Hilton’s practice utilising reassembly and performance.
Fictional devices and set pieces are constructed from fragmented memory referencing the historical, forgotten and imagined, which may never really have existed in the first place.

Rachel Tighe | ‘Incongruous lines
The practise of my work involves capturing life and the architecture around us through fast paced marks to develop illogical representations to create naïve paintings, which are full of movement and life. I explore the nature of mark making and represent my perceptions and deceptions onto canvas.

Katrina Vivian | ‘Appelplatz’
Exploring the mental and physical complexities of the human spirit, the splintered, dissection and distortion of visual perception. The presence of death and experiences of loss: loss within family, communities and cultures as a whole through the use of banal everyday objects.

Andy Nash | ‘Domestic Space’
Exploring commonplace objects, familiar everyday things that are often overlooked and taken for granted, yet at the same time are seemingly indispensable and necessary to the way we interact and engage with the world.

Notions of nostalgia, social and cultural collision are considered as platforms for creative enquiry and using a range of strategies that include editing, appropriation, manipulation, corruption and archiving, objects are distorted, combined, deconstructed and reinvented to reveal new insights and a fresh perspective.
