The Shuddas (www.myspace.com/theshuddas)

The Shuddas are a constantly evolving force of nature.

They formed in late 2008 with the mission of re-imagining the ska vibe and making it something that was both commercial and credible, while at the same time presenting a live show that other bands would be very reluctant to follow.

A clutch of songs with a vibrant pop/reggae sound but with an indie sentiment saw them through their first year on the live scene, and sparked strong interest from promoters, industry figures and gig goers alike.

Has the mission been a success so far? If playing every gig to a dancing, full house is a success, then the answer is a resounding yes.

As the band continues they are exploring new styles – from the four-on-the-floor techno-pop “Room Man”, through the virtually a cappella “Shallows of the Now” to the progressive and funky “Stupid in the 80s”, the band’s passion for what they’re trying to achieve intensifies and comes out in their live performances.

Frontman Jon Rose says “The live scene in most cities always has the same problems – people don’t want to attend gigs played by bands that aren’t so well known yet because people expect them to be boring. A lot of bands don’t put any effort into their live shows because they think that doesn’t matter. So nobody comes. We’re trying to change that.”

The Shuddas will be making their first online release later this year, which is as yet to be confirmed.

Takahashi’s Shelfish Concern (www.myspace.com/takahashisshellfishconcern)

Takahashi’s Shellfish Concern is a performance-art collaboration between Angela Guyton and Rodrigo Constanzo, that seeks to explore the shared space between music and visual art. While Rodrigo primarily concerns himself with the aural, and Angela with the visual, both have become increasingly comfortable with the other’s field, and a great deal of cross-over has occurred. However, having such a strong foothold in their particular areas, allows for each of their sensibilities to successfully translate into the other’s media. They routinely perform with additional musicians, including Anton Hunter, and Sergio Gato.
