We are delighted to announce CUBE’s new transformation into a television programme, sculpture and art video courtesy of international artist Christian Jankowski. This major exhibition, “The Perfect Gallery”, is based on the idea of translating a television format into the art world and vice versa and will be launching at CUBE this summer.

Famous for his playful collaborations with art and entertainment professionals, media manipulator Jankowski came to international attention with his innovative, intelligent, and funny video installation Telemistica, at the 1999 Venice Biennale.

For his latest transformation Jankowski worked with TV designer and presenter Gordon Whistance to create a one off edition of the 30-minute BBC interior makeover programme “House Invaders”. Jankowski invited presenter Whistance, who is relatively unfamiliar with contemporary art, to demonstrate his idea of a perfect exhibition space using the Pump House Gallery in London as an example.

CUBE was purposely designed as an architecture centre in 1998 by architects Hodder + Partners. For the first time since opening its doors visitors will come face to face with the architectural design of this award winning gallery.

“The Perfect Gallery” comments on the architecture of “white cube” spaces. Ian Beaumont of Architecture Today originally stated that “throughout CUBE’s galleries the changes in surface and volume, the quality of light and the legibility of the circulation combine to create a sophisticated ambience.”

When asked about “The Perfect Gallery”, Jankowski states: “When I was asked to make an exhibition for the space I had in mind the fact that gallery architecture is often talked about more than the art inside it.”

To celebrate the exhibition, CUBE has invited award winning architect Stephen Hodder to talk for the first time about the design and process of making their version of a perfect gallery.
