Blank Media Collective launches their new season of exhibitions at Susan Laughton.
Still Here is an exploration of marks, signs and symbols, searching for order, balance and control in a chaotic visual world. Landscape is the starting point, not as a picturesque or nostalgic view, but as a space travelled through and experienced often on the edges of the urban and the rural. It is a source of manmade and natural structures, surfaces and colour that allows the artist to construct her own pared-down responses.
Susan Laughton takes a reductive approach to the landscape, removing superfluous elements, concentrating on the physicality of edges, boundaries and divisions in contrast to the veiled, shifting white light of the north.
“I make drawings of remembered details seen from the corner of my eye, fleeting juxtapositions elusive to photography or more studied compositions. My paintings contrast pared down marks with random scratches, washes of paint with fine layers of plaster, gesso or card – a technique I have developed over the last few years. Structured and methodical approaches combined with spontaneous and intuitive reactions allow me to plan and take risks: to combine control with ‘let‘s see what happens if…” Susan Laughton
