blankpages Submissions Guidelines – Fiction, Poetry & Reviews (revised)Fiction
blankpages exists to reflect diverse forms of the arts — visual art, music, poetry — and the fiction page should reflect this diversity. We want to publish quality short fiction by exciting new voices.
So, what exactly are we looking for? Well, quality prose is a must, although that does not necessarily mean that it has to be flashy — sometimes simple prose is the most effective. We are open to stories that experiment with structure, narrative voice, prose style, or any other of the elements of fiction. However, we would publish a simple story that is well–told before an experimental piece that does not quite work.
Types of story we are not looking for include;
— Stories with a twist ending that comes out of no–where.
— Stories of a graphically violent or sexual nature.
— And, of course, stories that end ‘…and it was all a dream.’
Submission guidelines:
— Any themes will be considered
— Stories should be between 1500 and 2000 words
— Submit as an e–mail attachment in Word to Phil Craggs, Fiction Editor, at
.
Please note; swearing is not automatically prohibited, but it will be left to the editors’ discretion as to whether the language is considered appropriate.
We regret that as Blank Media is a self–funded organisation, we cannot offer payment for stories.
Poetry
Again, anything goes. The main criteria is quality and the fact that you have something to say. We are here to hear it and project it to an audience. Poetry is often seen as something underground or even pretentious. Underground art is not a bad thing but the problem arises when it becomes accessible to a very limited circle only. Poetry can also be seen as something sentimental. Some say that its heyday is long gone. We aim to represent a new generation of poets who will overcome all those misconceptions and inspire the next generation of poets to come.
Submission guidelines:
— Poems of 40 lines or less
— Any themes will be considered
— Submit as an e–mail attachment to Baiba Auria, Poetry Editor, at
.
Reviews
‘Seen or read anything good lately? Why not tell us about it? blankpages is keen to hear your opinions. We accept short reviews of books, gigs, exhibitions and films.
Submission guidelines:
— Reviews should be between 250 — 350 words
— Submit as an e-mail attachment to
.
Please note; if e-mail unavailable, mail submissions will be accepted. If you wish your work to be returned, please include a SAE. Mail submissions should be sent to Blank Media, 169a Mauldeth Road, Ladybarn, Manchester M14 6SG
IMPORTANT NOTICE
THE EDITORIAL TEAM KINDLY REQUESTS THAT YOU DO NOT SEND US WORK THAT FAILS TO MEET WITH THE ABOVE CRITERIA. SUCH WORK WILL NOT BE CONSIDERED FOR INCLUSION IN BLANKPAGES AND IT IS WITH REGRET WE WILL BE UNABLE TO OFFER FEEDBACK.
