Biography / Personal Statement

The nature and outcome of Jane’s work can be very varied. The tree, pathway or river may be the form; the needle, thread or fabric may be the tool; but the active process and relationship between the elements chosen in creating and the creators' work are her priority. This is what Jane aims to share with participants and audience.

Jane trained in woven textiles at the Central School of Arts and Design in the 70’s and then went to the Scottish College of Textiles to do a Diploma in yarn design.

After working in the industrial textile world, Jane has had a varied career of teaching, designing and exhibiting in Uk and abroad. In recent years Jane has focussed on the environmental effects of making work, the pace and processes involved.

Jane completed her MA in Textile and culture at Norwich School of Art and Design in 2007

Collaborations are a regular feature of Jane’s work, with artists and other communities on a variety of projects.

‘Fair Trade: Material Matters’ was launched at the Moscow Biennale, 2007. It is a fair trade exchange within the art community. A growing collection of self-portraits has become an online community. Hand stitched, recycled blankets are the material matter creating the physical work that displays the artists’ work. The Fair Trade exchange is a deliberate comment on financial value placed on work, often not to benefit the artist. Material Matters relates to the process of Slow Making, exploring the process of making in the context of sustainable actions and relationships. ‘Fair Trade: Material Matters’ has elements of traditional drawing, techniques as well as contemporary textile and environmental art. Jane has skills to enable schools to use the work in curriculum-linked activities and other organizations as a starting point for discussion, artwork and relationship work.
